WHY?

Mental health issues are growing especially in the our younger generations. Mental well-being supports positive development in a child's emotional, psychological and social environment. Building a mentally tough youth can improve their academic performance, increase their social skills and relationships. Increasing their decision making and physical health. All this builds their self-esteem and lays a foundation for a sense of identity which will only assist them throughout their adult life.

THE PROBLEM

Mental health issues are growing. Even moreso for the younger generations. Depression, anxiety and suicide rates are all increasing. Along with the pressures facing them and what they are being exposed to from their school environments and social media platforms is taking a toll. The overarching problems that face mental health and the prevalence of issues are growing. Although improving, there is still a stigma surrounding mental health and treatments. Lastly, access to services are the major hurdles that are impacting the mental health of our society today.

Prevalence.

Mental health issues are on the rise. Although growing amongst most age groups the highest level of growing problems are our youth. Factors such as social media and the constant connectivity and comparison have shown a link to increased rates of depression and anxiety. Throw in the lack of social connections and impacts from the pandemic have had a negative impact upon the younger generations.

Stigma.

Although improving, the stigma surrounding mental health is a significant challenge. This is manifested by societal attitudes, discrimination and the misconceptions surrounding mental problems. These alone can prevent individuals from seeking the help they so desperately need.

Access.

There is a shortage of quality services available for those in need. In addition, the mental health field has unfortunately adopted a one-size fits all approach, which leads to disengagement. In addition, we as a society are quick to medicate versus get to the underlying issues.
